What exactly is the Runescape Wilderness?
With the launch of a new region called "the Wilderness," every spot that
wasn't Wilderness was a non-player kill zone. Players could still fight
mobs, as well as non-player characters in all areas however, they could
only fight other players in the Wilderness.
Player killing became a purely voluntary act. If a player wanted to
engage in combat with other players, they went in the Wilderness. If they
wanted to compete however, they did not go into it.
Limitations on levels were in place such that on the southernmost edge of
the Wilderness the players were able to engage those within 1 level of
their level. When players moved northward, greater level differences were
allowed up to 46.
In the event of a player's death, they dropped whatever items they owned
(whether stored or equipped) except for their 3 most valuable items. If a
player was the first to attack another player, a skull would appear on
top of their avatar. This signified that they would drop everything they
owned. Dropped items could be looted by murderers of players. However,
newbies could get around this problem of getting rid of their top
equipment by merely carrying three good items which they could keep even
if they died.
It's crucial to remember that players were aware that they could stay
clear of content between players when they wanted to. In contrast, when a
player set foot in the Wilderness was considered to be a fair game
because it was a place which was specifically designed for PvP. In other
words, player killers (pkers) had their own territory that was theirs to
rule, and oh, the naive rookies who ventured into the place without
having good fighting skills or gear.
Of course, with this type of configuration, the expected outcome was
obvious. The more ferocious, high-level players were the dominant players
in the deep Wilderness while the casual or low-level players remained in
the low-level zones. Though the elite pkers considered themselves the
kings of the Wilderness but there were more low-to mid-level players, and
they also enjoyed more killing action.
The ability to train could be developed in peace and not have to venture
into the thrilling and dangerous PvP area for fun. If a player who is
predominantly a skilled one desired to kill or kill players, they could
make a new character was designed to kill players. Likewise, a high-level
pker could make a low-level pk character in order to take advantage of
the greater activity at low-level Wilderness.
Remember, playing Runescape was totally free! There was no limit on the
number of accounts you could create. It was therefore easy to make a
lower-level pk character for fun.
