RS Gold is one of the grandfathers of the MMORPG genre. It's currently ranked as one of the longest-running games on the market since its debut in the beginning of January 2001. The original browser-based game has seen numerous different variations due to its massive player base.
In between is Old School RuneScape giving players the experience of the classic 2006 and the brief-lived DarkScape offering players a more PvP-based gaming experience. The developer Jagex has joined forces with board game maker Steamforged Games to release not only one, but two tabletop games over the course of 2022.
Steamforged Games' partnership in partnership with Jagex is the most recent in a long string of partnerships that have brought some of the most popular gaming franchises into a tabletop-based environment. The tabletop gaming company already has created board games that are based on games such as Monster Hunter World and Dark Souls and most recently launched a massively successful Kickstarter campaign for a Resident Evil 2 board game which raised over 1 million pounds in the first quarter of this year.
Now, the developer has set its sights on the world of Gielinor and RuneScape and plans to launch the board game as well as a core book for the tabletop RPG this year. The two RPG adaptations will feature a variety of the most well-known characters from RuneScape and places, which will allow a group of up to five players to take on classic quests that are part of RuneScape as well as bring adventures within this world called Gielinor to the home of Gielinor.
Players will be able to craft and upgrade equipment, interact with NPCs as they undertake many side missions that are inspired by this classic MMORPG. The board game will debut with a Kickstarter campaign later in the year. Meanwhile, the main tabletop RPG book is set to launch directly in stores.
The essential book for tabletop RPGs will be compatible with massive tabletop games Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition core books, allowing Dungeon Masters to seamlessly integrate elements from RuneScape into their games.
Jagex Chief Executive Officer Phil Mansell was optimistic about the project , expressing his excitement over his enthusiasm for the Kickstarter project "involving people from the RuneScape and RuneScape communities" in addition, Steamforged CCO Mat Hart believed the "rich RuneScape universe will be beautifully translated" into a tabletop setting.
RuneScape has seen a significant expansion from its web-based predecessors over the past few years, with Steamforged's board games being the latest effort by Jagex. In an interview, a variety of Jagex employees spoke about the transition of the mobile version of RuneScape into an all-platform game this past September.
