The Attributes of Successful Distance Learners

Distance learners must maintain a variety of characteristics in order to find success in online courses. These are varied in their complexity, but are manageable by all learners. Successful distance learners must be self-disciplined, critical thinkers, and able to communicate their needs. Knowing that they possess these attributes, learners can feel confident in their ability to succeed at an online education, regardless of the content.

Primarily, distance learners must be self-disciplined. Since online courses often do not require scheduled meetings with professors or colleagues, learners must be able to complete all of the required work, watch the assigned videos, and read the course documents without undue prompting by the professor. They must be able to do this in a respectable amount of time prior to the due date and in a manner that promotes knowledge retention. This may manifest itself in setting a specific time each week or day to work on the material, so long as the learner shows enough discipline to have the material completed as requested by the course administrator. As the University of Houston, Learning and Assessment Services points out, “effective distance learners become and stay responsible for themselves” (2008). Technology Tool Overview

Elluminate (Webinar)

A link will be sent to all participants directing them to the live webinar that will be hosted by Elluminate. During this webinar, students will observe a presentation on workplace safety and the general guidelines surrounding appropriate expectations. The webinar is required for all participants.

Forum (Discussion Board)
Through different modules of the course, students are expect to participate in a forum discussion regarding specific workplace safety topics. A separate forum has been created for each module that students will participate in that will contain all of the posts made by trainees. Within this forum, students are expected to post thoughtful responses to safety scenarios and appropriate feedback to one another.

PBWorks (Wiki)
Students will participate in a wiki in which they will discuss workplace safety topics as designated by the course syllabus. A membership to PBWorks is required for all students.

Presentations
Various presentations will be available to students throughout the course. They will be posted under the Content heading, on the page dedicated to the pertaining module. These must be downloaded by the student to view on their personal computers.

Videos
All related videos will be in .mpeg format and will be posted to each module under the Content heading. They will be linked to their internet location on YouTube. Students will not need to download the videos, but will be able to view them on the course website.
