The Madden NFL 24 suggested a settlement in spring of 2013 that would contribute $50 million, minus an estimated $8 million in legal costs, into a fund for retired players. A number of high-profile former players have spoken out in support of the settlement which includes Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown. Jim Brown is the Hall of Fame running back has a board of retired players that would be tasked with allocating the money from the settlement.
A court of federal appeals in Minnesota agreed to the settlement with more than 22.000 former players are given until Aug. 30 to accept the deal or opt-out of the agreement. Dryer is urging his fellow players not to sign the agreement.
"They're taking you on a business model with the league that would raise money for former player," Dryer explained. "But those models have proven that they are dry wells."
The plaintiffs also take issue with what they perceive to be lack of transparency the settlement and also the way it will work.
"We aren't quite sure why they come up with $50 million," Dryer said. "The money goes to an account, and the fund will give it existing charities and the charity then, magically, manages to give it to the players. I am not interested in being in a field I'm not sure about.
"What can be done is get money directly to former players. That is what we're hoping for. We're looking to find out what sources of revenue are to madden 24 mut coins agree on a deal for all former players.
